Ramp It Up

The Ramp-It-Up Project creates communities where every person can access every space through a fun and engaging community project that raises awareness and helps remove barriers. Physical barriers in our neighbourhoods prevent many of us from enjoying some of the amazing buildings and spaces that Calgary has to offer. With labour from inspired volunteers and leadership from small businesses, we can offer single-stepped storefronts with a custom ramp made at no cost to them. The brightly coloured ramps are not a perfect solution to accessibility, but they create curiosity and get people talking. A simple ramp can make life easier for everyone. Participants in previous ramp projects have shared that a ramped storefront is more inviting not just to individuals in wheelchairs, but also to parents pushing strollers, seniors, walkers with wheeled shopping bags, couriers using dollies and individuals using mobility aids. Business owners have discovered that they are able to increase their customer base by providing a storefront that everyone can enter and exit.
