C.U.P.s - Reducing Community Use of Disposables

Green Calgary is taking aim at “C.U.P.s” – “completely unnecessary products.” From plastic bags clogging streams, to plastic bottles littering parks, to garbage cans heaped with paper coffee cups, we see these products everywhere, everyday.

Green Calgary’s “C.U.P.s” campaign aims to educate Calgarians about the true and tragic costs of the continued use of disposables, then move them into ACTION – first on paper coffee cups. These cups are lined with non-compostable, non-recyclable plastic which leaches toxins (some of which are suspected carcinogens) into both our beverages and – as garbage – into our environment.

We invite each of you to join us in the CUPS pledge – to eliminate your personal use of paper coffee cups, to engage your family, friends, and office mates to do the same. Together, we can reduce, or better still eliminate the estimated 62 million paper cups used EACH Year in Calgary, and instead have Calgarians “lug their mugs” or sit peacefully at a table sipping their brew from a stay cup, taking a delicious break rather than racing off with a piece of soon-to-be garbage to add to Calgary landfill.

We want to create a future of delicious beverages, and no waste hang-over! A future in which the persistence pollution of plastics is no longer a threat to our air, soil, wildlife, and our health.

FACT: The average paper cups is garbage within 15 minutes of use and can last in landfill for more than 500 years.
